Costa Rica announced last week that it would close its two remaining state zoos, more than a decade after it passed a law to ban keeping wild animals in government-sponsored captivity but was met with legal blowback. Costa Rica’s Ministry of Environment and Energy said in a statement on Saturday that it would not renew its contract with Fundazoo, a foundation that had run the zoos. The move will close the country’s last two state zoos: the Simón Bolívar Zoo and the Santa Ana Conservation Center. The police killed an armed student after an active shooter had been reported near a middle school in Mount Horeb, Wis., on Wednesday, the authorities said. “This could have been a far worse tragedy,” Mr. Kaul said. Finland has been the happiest country in the world for seven years in a row. Now, it's inviting people to learn the ways of the Finnish and how everyone can "hack their happiness." After hosting a successful 2023 masterclass in happiness, the country's tourism sector, Visit Finland and Helsinki Partners, are welcoming a new group of people to learn the ways of the Finnish people. During the five-day masterclass, participants will learn from a team of three "Happiness Hackers" who will share hacks they can apply to their everyday lives, according to a press release shared with CNBC Make It. The happiness hacks will highlight four key themes of Finnish happiness:Nature and lifestyle Health and balance Design and everyday Food and well-being"Finnish happiness boils down to the simple things in life: connecting with nature, caring for one's mind and body, and appreciating design and art around us," Heli Jimenez, Senior Director of International Marketing at Business Finland, stated in a press release.

Six years ago, Illinois farmer John Ackerman didn't hire any contract workers at all. He enjoys mentoring young people, but says it's felt harder lately to justify hiring inexperienced workers when contract workers do the same hard, physical jobs faster and better. Climate change affects all farm workers, but advocates and researchers say this is a reason to focus particularly on these workers. The USDA data showed an uptick in the number of farms using migrant labor, both within farms that already hired contract workers and overall. He’s tried reaching out H-2A workers on nearby farms, but says their supervisors won’t let them talk to him.

A United Airlines flight that took off on Friday morning from San Francisco International Airport landed in Oregon in the afternoon missing an external panel, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The panel was found to be missing after the plane, a Boeing 737-800, landed safely at its scheduled destination at Rogue Valley International Medford Airport in Oregon and parked at a gate, United Airlines said in a statement. It was unclear when or how the panel went missing. According to the airline, there was no indication of any damage to the plane during the flight, and the aircraft did not declare an emergency on its way to the Medford airport. “We’ll conduct a thorough examination of the plane and perform all the needed repairs before it returns to service,” the airline said.
